Donor Programs
For many years, access to donor sperm, egg and embryo programs has been open to single parent and same sex parent families as well as heterosexual couples. Only about 25% of requests for access to clinic donor sperm are now from heterosexual couples. This does lead to challenges in keeping up with demand, given the large demand for donor sperm, for example, and the increasing difficulty and complexity in recruiting potential donors.
Where a donor is needed (either egg or sperm), it can often be a difficult decision whether to choose a known (related or unrelated) donor or a clinic recruited (anonymous) donor.
There are advantages and disadvantages to both options, which you can discuss in a non-judgemental environment with Dr Weston. Where overseas donors are involved, access may be limited to certain states, leading patients to need treatment in NSW or Qld rather than in Victoria. Some known donors are overseas citizens, requiring a specific medical class visa in order to get to Australia to donate. No matter the complexity of your proposed arrangement, we can assist you. The regulatory environment is constantly changing, and if you are needing donor sperm or eggs, you need to be seeing someone sympathetic to your desired family, who understands the latest laws, and has access to a clinic with the expertise to access the treatment while complying fully with the state Reproductive Technology Laws.
All donors need comprehensive genetic and infection screening, matching with the genetics of the corresponding gamete, counselling, and in some cases seeking approval through the state regulatory authority. Navigating this requires a unit with the resources and expertise to assist you. While there are additional costs to accessing private donor services, you should be fully informed of these costs before starting treatment.
If you are having difficulty understanding the process of accessing donor eggs, donor sperm, or donor embryos, we stand ready to help you.
