OBSTETRICS AND GYNAECOLOGY

Gynaecology

Gynaecological conditions affecting fertility include, but are not limited to, PCOS, endometriosis, adenomyosis, fibroids, ovarian cysts, endometrial hyperplasia, endometrial polyps, and hydrosalpinx. Dr Weston is able to operate on all of these conditions in both Melbourne and rural Gippsland.

It is important when seeing a gynaecological surgeon and you have fertility issues, that they know when surgery is appropriate.

The focus in Dr Weston’s practice is always to carefully consider if surgery will improve or reduce your chance of conceiving, and to consider both medical and surgical treatment.

A laparoscopy is a minor surgical procedure when a telescope camera is inserted through a small incision to directly visually inspect the uterus, tubes and ovaries. It is the ‘gold standard’ fertility investigation.

Imaging with dye studies, such as a Hysterosalpingogram or a HyCoSy ultrasound study, are alternative ways of determining tubal patency in fertility patients, but sometimes a laparoscopy is necessary, such as to determine the cause of blockages seen on imaging, to try to unblock tubes, and to diagnose other gynaecological problems that can affect fertility, such as endometriosis.

Surgical intervention may be necessary before successful conception can be contemplated.

For example, fibroids distorting the uterine cavity may need to be removed to reduce the risk of miscarriage, a hydrosalpinx may need to be removed to improve IVF success rates, and endometriosis may need operated on to improve fertility.

Sometimes, the complexity of surgery needed to allow conception to occur needs the assistance of one of the few surgeons in Melbourne with advanced surgical skills, or working in a multi-disciplinary surgical team with 2 or more specialties working together. Dr Weston is able to guide you as to when such surgery should be contemplated, and has advanced open and laparoscopic surgeons he regularly sends patients to where required.
